With it’s much-deserved reputation for beauty and glamour, Capri is a must see on any Amalfi Coast itinerary. However, all too often this magical island is allowed only a day trip by travelers with limited time or budget. While you could easily spend multiple days enjoying all Capri has to offer, here are some suggestions for how to make the most of just one glorious day!
Arrive Early – The last return ferries to Sorrento and Positano depart Capri before 7PM (some later options are available for return to Naples), which means you’ll need to see as much as possible before dinner. Don’t waste precious time by sleeping in on this day!
Start with a Boat Tour – Seeing Capri by sea is an absolute MUST! Skipping a boat tour in Capri is akin to skipping the Colosseum in Rome, and since crowds gather quickly during summer months, you’ll maximize your time by taking this tour early before you are facing long waits. Inexpensive public tours are readily available from Marina Grande at regular intervals, but if you are willing to spend a bit more, a private boat tour is a worthwhile experience. Not to mention you’ll feel like a total celebrity as you sail past the crowded group tour boats! A basic 2-3 hour private tour should cost around €300 and is best booked in advance. All tours should include a stop at the blue grotto, but the entrance fee is usually a separate charge.
Have Lunch in Anacapri – When you return from your sea tour, make your way to Anacapri by bus or taxi. Or if you are the more active type, you can climb the Phoenician Steps from Marina Grande to Anacapri. These over 900 stairs were once used to connect the town of Anacapri to vital resources arriving by sea, and the view on the way is nothing short of spectacular. Once you arrive in town, explore the shops and take a break for lunch. You may also wish to take the chair lift to the peak of Monte Solaro to enjoy the view from Capri’s highest point!
Explore the Piazzetta – In the afternoon, take the bus or a taxi back to the town of Capri. Grab a cocktail (I recommend an Aperol Spritz!) in the Piazzetta and watch the crowd bustle by you. If you love to shop, Capri offers enough designer shops to keep you busy for the rest of the day. Even if it’s just window shopping!
Take a Selfie with the Faraglioni – Drag yourself away from shopping with enough time to make the 15 minute walk to the Punta Tragara Belvedere scenic overlook. Here you’ll have a breathtaking view of the Faraglioni rock formations, and a perfect photo opportunity to end your day!
Don’t Miss the Hydrofoil! – As you wrap up your day, take the funicular from the town of Capri back to Marina Grande for return to your base town. Be sure to check the schedule for the day and return to the port before the last ferry departure.
Work with an Expert – Travel experts like me want to help you plan a day that is customized just for you! Maybe a quiet afternoon at a beach club is more your style? Or a full day of scenic hikes? And if you prefer a bit more structure to your day trip, I can match you with a private or small group land and sea tour. Getting personalized advice is always a good idea.
Want to stay for dinner? Capri offers many fine dining options for those wishing to stay a bit later. As an added bonus, many day-trippers will depart later in the day, leaving the island much less crowded in the evening. You’ll need to arrange for a private boat return transfer or take the late return ferry to Naples and transfer by car, bus or train to your hotel from there.
